Sending Story: Rifqi Pandu KL-YES 2016/2017

Hi! My name is Pandu and I’m a KL-YES student to USA of year program 2016-2017. I’m the lucky one who got placed in rural area of Kansas, at Linn Valley town to be precisely. It’s really interesting here as I have to adjust with a new life style and the new environment is challenging. I enjoy it.  I have been here for 5 months - there are so many things that I have experienced: from a good, fun, exciting stuff, to hard, tiring, and frustrating stuff. One thing I never thought that I would do is wrestling. Yes wrestling! From the many choices of sport offered at the Prairie View High school where I study: basketball, football, baseball, softball, volleyball … I decided to try wrestling. For those who don’t know what wrestling is, it’s when two sweaty guy hugging each other on the mat, literally... well, not really … LOL. Wrestling is a full body contact sport with an opponent and trying to throw or hold them down to the ground. I know this sport exists, but I never knew that I would love it!

Wrestling is hard, tough, and tiring. We have to practice everyday after school, we have conditioning or what I call “hell day” every Monday where you don’t do anything but training in strength, resistance, and endurance and we practice technique for the rest of the week. We usually have wrestling meeting every Thursday and tournament few times a month or two on Saturday.

My first wrestling match, I did so great… I lost!....LOL. Well, it was because I didn’t really understand wrestling rules fully. All I knew was I had to take this dude’s back down to the mat. I threw my first headlock to him, I slammed him to the mat, but then I heard somebody yelled “LET HIM GO!”. I thought I made mistake so I let him go. It was a misunderstanding. It wasn’t my coach who yelled. I started to lose concentration and he pinned me. I didn’t know what I was doing, but the coach said that was the nastiest headlock he ever saw … LOL!

I learned more of the rules after that match, and get better at wrestling. I got possible concussion one time because my head got slammed to the mat pretty hard. I joined wrestling tournament 3 times and was placed 1st and 2nd on the second and last tournament. It’s not bad for a rookie right? I also got 2nd place for team one time.

I really enjoy my time in wrestling. The sport, coaches, team mates, all of them together are one heck of a good time … LOL! That’s my story for now, looking forward to share more with you guys!
